How to use School Nudge

Everything you need, in about five minutes. Get it on your phone, add your children, paste in a newsletter, and you'll get a nudge the night before.

  1. Get it on your phone

School Nudge works in your phone's web browser. There's nothing to download from an app store.

    1. Go to app.schoolnudge.app.
    2. Type your email and tap Send me a sign-in link. There's no password.
    3. Open the email and tap the link, or type the 6-digit code into the app.

Put it on your home screen

Do this so it opens like a normal app. On iPhone you need it for notifications to work.

    • iPhone: open it in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. Open it from your home screen and sign in again. Use the 6-digit code, because the link in the email opens Safari, not the app.
    • Android: open it in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app.

Can't see the email? Check your junk, spam or promotions folder.

  2. Set up your family

The first time you sign in, three quick screens walk you through it.

    1. Who's at school? Add each child's first name and pick a colour. Year or class and school name are optional.
    2. Share it with the other parent. Send them an invite link, or tap Skip for now and do it later.
    3. Turn on reminders. Tap Turn on notifications and allow them when your phone asks. Or choose Just email me.

You can change any of this later in the Family tab.

  3. Read a newsletter

This is the quickest way to get dates in.

    1. Tap the Newsletter tab.
    2. Paste in the school email or newsletter text. For a paper letter, tap Add photos, screenshots or a PDF and take a photo of it.
    3. Tap Find the dates.
    4. Check the list. Untick anything you don't need, then tap Add to calendar.

Always check the dates before you save them. The app reads newsletters with AI, which is good but not perfect. If a date looks odd, it'll flag it.

Sway newsletters can't be opened from a link. Save them as a PDF or take screenshots instead.

  4. Add a date yourself

Tap the + button in the middle of the bottom bar. Fill in what's happening, the date, a time if there is one, and who it's for.

If there's something to do or bring, put it in Anything to do or bring?, for example "Pay £12 on ParentPay". You'll get a heads-up a week before as well as the night before.

To change or delete a date, tap it in Week or Upcoming.

  5. Weekly items and holidays

For things that happen every week, like PE kit on a Tuesday or library books on a Friday:

    1. Go to Family, then Every week, and tap + Add a weekly item.
    2. Pick the day and the child, and leave Term time only ticked.

Then add your school holidays under Holidays, with the first and last day off. Weekly items set to term time only won't nudge you during them.

  6. Your reminders

You get one round-up in the evening with everything for tomorrow. It comes at 7pm unless you change it.

In Family, under Reminders, you can:

    • change the Evening nudge time
    • turn Notifications on this phone on or off
    • choose Email me too
    • tap Send me a test nudge to check it's working

The Week tab shows today and the next seven days. Upcoming shows everything after that.

  7. See dates in your calendar

Your School Nudge dates can show up in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook, next to everything else.

    1. Go to Family, then Your calendar.
    2. Tap Add to Google Calendar, or Add to Apple Calendar or Outlook, and confirm.

For anything else, tap Copy the calendar link and paste it where your calendar asks to subscribe from a URL. In Google Calendar on a computer, that's Other calendars, then +, then From URL.

It isn't instant. Your calendar app checks for changes every few hours, and Google can take up to a day. Your evening nudges always come on time.

Anyone with the link can see your family's dates. If you share it by mistake, tap reset the link in the same place, then add the new one.

  8. Share with the other parent

Up to four parents or carers can share one calendar. Everyone sees the same dates, can add their own, and gets their own reminders.

Go to Family, then Parents and carers, and tap Invite someone. Send them the link. It works for 7 days.

  9. Your account

You'll find Sign out and Delete my account at the bottom of Family.

If you're the last person in your family, deleting your account removes all your family's dates straight away. If others are still in the family, only you are removed and they keep the calendar.

More on what's stored is in the privacy policy.
